Council Proclamations

The City of Kamloops regularly receives requests for formal pronouncement of proclamations by City Council from groups or organizations who wish to raise awareness of an upcoming event or provincial / national day they wish to celebrate at a local level.

Proclamations will only be considered if there is representation from the local chapter of an organization or group present at the Council meeting to speak to the proclamation.

How to arrange for a Proclamation
A date for your proclamation to appear on a Council Agenda is arranged by contacting Legislative Services by telephone, email or in person three weeks prior to the date of the formal pronouncement.

And you must provide the following information:

  1. Name of organization / group requesting proclamation
  2. Name of individual who will provide a brief five (5) minute maximum overview of what the proclamation is for.
  3. Name and contact number of individual arranging for the proclamation.
  4. Title of the proclamation.
  5. A copy of the wording for the proclamation.

What to Expect at the Council Meeting
An official proclamation bearing the City crest will be prepared by Legislative Services based on the sample wording you have provided.

By registering your proclamation with Legislative Services, a time slot will be reserved on the Council agenda on the date mutually agreed upon for your organization / group's proclamation. The individual representing your group must be present in Council Chambers at 3:00 p.m. and be prepared to speak to your proclamation. " Organizations / Groups are allotted maximum five (5) minutes to provide a brief overview of its event or day of special interest.

When your presentation is complete, Council will vote on a motion and may proclaim your event or day of special interest. If so proclaimed, the Mayor will sign the official proclamation and present it to the individual representing the organization / group, who is then free to leave Council Chambers.

If an organization / group wishes to have a photo opportunity with the Mayor or a member of Council, this should be arranged outside of the Council meeting and can be done by contacting the Executive Assistant for Council at (250) 828-3494.
