Department Overview

GIS leverages new technologies to dynamically create maps providing value added service. In addition to creating maps, GIS allows for descriptive information (known as attributes) to be stored in a database that is linked to its associated map feature. For example, information such as the owner of a property, the length of a road, or the name of a park are recorded.

Queries such as, "List the addresses and show the properties that are located within the 20-year flood plain" are now within the realm of GIS.
