GIS Department Overview

The City's GIS system lets users visualize, analyze and interpret geographic and spatial information to better deliver municipal services. Unlike mapping of years ago where maps were drawn and copies printed on paper, the GIS systems of today dynamically create maps "on the fly" based on queries. Within the GIS system, attributes of objects can be recorded, for example a road can have an attribute indicating if it is gravel or paved. Buildings can have height attributes, and parks can have an attribute indicating if they are dog friendly.

With such capabilities users can make queries to the GIS system such as; "List the addresses and show the properties that are located within the 20-year flood plain". With results returned in seconds, staff can have a visual representation of the data they request, overlayed on accurate mapping and ortho photography.
