Human Resources

Trust
This corporate value is seen in our everyday actions around employee development, labour-management relationship building and employee involvement.

Over the last few years, our culture has seen a paradigm shift towards excellence. To maintain this momentum, the City has developed initiatives to support our employees.

Training & Development
The City encourages employee personal and professional development and supports this commitment through our Training and Development program which pays for up to 100% of tuition and material costs.

Employee Involvement
Employees are involved in these joint committees:
Labour Management
Safety
Employee and Family Assistance Program
Employee Appreciation
Wellness Works
Training
Family Literacy
Recognition Task Force
Orientation Task Force

We also offer financial assistance to support individuals (up to $200) or teams (up to $500) with travel costs associated with competing in work-related events at the Provincial, Federal, or International levels.

Quest For Leadership Program
The program develops and supports the management skills of our current and potential leaders to ensure that they can act with knowledgeable independence when carrying out their duties. Courses include management skills development offered through Thompson Rivers University as well as internal workshops on developmental and corrective coaching, improving workplace relationships, budgeting, and time management.

Labour/Management Relationships
Our joint union labour/management committees (City and Firefighters) have been very successful working together on issues that arise in a unionized environment. The relationship is based on mutual respect and focuses on workplace issues, resolving them, and moving forward in a positive manner.

The benefits of this co-operative relationship has resulted in fewer grievances and a better appreciation of important workplace issues.

Coaching Guide
Our coaching guide, (jointly developed with managers, employees and our Unions), clearly sets out a process for dealing with developmental and corrective coaching situations and focuses on setting expectations with employees, and ensures fair treatment. The coaching guide was used as a "best practices" model at a B.C. Human Resource Association annual conference in 2003.

Since then, we have received many requests for this guide from other municipalities.

These practices help to build and develop trust in our workforce.
