How do I arrange to receive a recycling container?

When moving into a new home contact 828-3374 to order a recycling container and garbage container.

How much will the new system cost me?

The annual fee is $33.00. This fee includes container lease and collection fees.

Is the recycling program mandatory?

Yes, all curbside collection customers will be supplied w/ a 245L wheeled recycling container. NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you receive curbside garbage pickup, you will also receive curbside recyclable pickup. You will receive one recycling container for every garbage container at your residence. The relationship between garbage and recycling containers is a minimum of one to one, but you may choose to have more recycling containers than garbage containers.

Are various sizes of recycling containers available?

No, only 245L wheeled containers are available and will be distributed to residents.

Will the program include multiple-family dwellings?

Only those multi-family dwellings that currently have curbside garbage service will receive recycling containers under the new program.

The City is planning to eventually have recycling solutions for all residents, so if you do not currently receive curbside collection, stay tuned for more information.

What if my garbage sizing needs change because of my new recycling container?

Residents may find that upon receiving a recycling container, their garbage container sizing needs will change. Please wait for at least one month before requesting a size change to better understand your solid waste needs and prevent incurring a charge if you change your mind later. All residents will be eligible for one garbage container DOWNSIZE at no cost until August 1st, 2008. Size change requests after August 1st will be charged a $50 administrative fee.

Do I have to bag my recycleables in garbage bags?

NO. Leave recyclables loose and unsorted. All cardboard and boxboard material should be broken down to fit into the container with ease with the lid closed. All lids and caps should be removed from bottles and cans.

What do I do with the cart when I move?

As with the garbage containers, the recycling containers will be left with the residence they are delivered to, as each container is engraved with an identification number which is recorded with your address. If you are moving into a residence that has curbside collection but does not have a container, please phone for one to be delivered. Please record your container serial numbers on the information hanger for future reference.

Where should I store my cart?

Store the container in a secure location such as their carport, garage, or at the side of their house. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to identify a secure location to store the container on non-collection days.

I have lane service. Can I leave my cart in the lane on non-collection days?

No, the cart must be stored on private property. It is the responsibility of each lane customer to ensure that the wheeled carts are freely accessible from the lane for proper collection and to ensure that the wheeled carts are removed from the lane after collection and safely stored on the customer's property.

Is there a certain way my cart should be set out for collection?
How to position your recycling container image

When using the cart, please follow these simple placement techniques to help make it easier for our collectors:

What happens if the cart is damaged, lost or stolen?

Contact the Solid Waste Hotline at 828-3374. The City will assess the situation and make arrangements for you to receive a replacement or repair the cart at no charge. If it is determined that theft or damage occurred through neglect or misuse on behalf of the property owner or their tenant, it will be replaced at the property owners' expense. Residents will be responsible for routine maintenance, including keeping the carts clean, removing the carts from the street after collection, and storing the carts in a safe place.

What provisions will be made for disabled residents?

If you have difficulty moving the cart to your collection point, you may apply for City assistance. If you medically qualify, City crews will move your cart to the collection point and return it at the end of collection day. Application forms are available by calling the Solid Waste Hotline at 828-3374.
