Unplug and Play for Family Literacy Week
January 22 - 28, 2012
The 2nd Annual Unplug and Play for Family Literacy will take place from January 22nd to 28th, 2012 in support of Family Literacy Day©, an annual initiative developed by ABC Life Literacy Canada to encourage parents and children to spend at least 15 minutes a day enjoying a learning activity.
Kamloops Early Language and Literacy Initiative (KELLI) and Literacy in Kamloops (LINK), in partnership with the City of Kamloops, the Kamloops Daily News and many other organizations, are planning events that encourage families to build literacy by reconnecting and playing together.
A schedule of the free events and activities will be published in a special insert in the Kamloops Daily News on January 21st. It includes free swimming, skating, dancing, story time, games night, literacy lego, Mother Goose swim, and much more.
Culminating the week is the 3rd Annual Heap the Honda Children's Book Drive. Residents can donate new or gently used children's books to the annual event by dropping them off at locations throughout the city including Kamloops Honda, Sahali Mall, or any Starbucks location.
On Wednesday January 25th, 2012 at 6:30 pm, well-known speaker, author and the go-to expert on the impact of technology on child development, Cris Rowan, will give a free
lecture at the Henry Grube Education Centre on "Raising Today's Children". It is about balancing healthy activities with technology use and ensuring a sustainable future for
children of the new millennium.
