Waste-free Lunch Challenge
Waste Reduction Week will take place from October 17-23 across Canada. During this week the City of Kamloops is holding a Waste-Free Challenge for all students. In conjunction, all residents who downsize their garbage containers will not have to pay the $50 fee for downsizing. There are two challenges to choose from.
Challenge One - Waste Audit
Students will weigh all items in their lunch. Items are first separated into categories and then weighed with a scale. This is done each day after
lunch for the week. Detailed videos on how to perform a waste audit, or shopping and packing a waste free lunch are available at
http://wastefreelunch.com/videos
Challenge Two - Waste Race
Students will track all items in their lunch. This is done by putting a check mark for each item in the corresponding box on the Waste Race
Challenge graph. For example, if they bring a banana, a check mark goes in the compost section (Even if no composting program is in place). If they
bring a granola wrapper, a check mark goes in the landfill section etc.
