Environmentally Sensivtive Areas
Information for Kamloops Property Owners adjacent to Environmentally Sensitive Areas
The City wishes to establish a new city-wide Development Permit Area for Environmentally Sensitive Lands encompassing select properties. This notice is intended to advise residents of these properties of an upcoming Public Hearing at which City Council will be considering the adoption of new guidelines for properties identified in the Environmentally Sensitive area.
Map: Environmentally Sensitive Areas
The Map below shows the affected properties. If you received a letter and a report in the mail then your property is in the new development permit area.
Over the past 15 years, Kamloops has experienced rapid and extensive residential growth, particularly in areas such as Aberdeen, Juniper, and Batchelor Heights. Most of this growth abuts areas identified as Environmentally Sensitive within the Official Community Plan. Therefore, anticipated new growth in these areas will place pressure on predominantly undisturbed ecosystems.
The City of Kamloops has identified environmental protection as a priority through a number of policy documents and planning processes, including: the Official Community Plan, the Aberdeen Plan, the North Shore Neighbourhood Plan, and the Juniper Neighbourhood Plan; the preparation of the Sustainable Kamloops Plan; and the objectives identified in both the Council and Corporate Strategic Plans.
Most development within the identified Environmentally Sensitive Lands will require a Council process to gain permission to develop. Specific reports may need to be submitted to administration and Council addressing issues such as: steep slopes, vegetation, grasslands, wildlife corridors, areas that should be set aside from development, and ecosystems needing protection.
Environmental protection on a larger scale is important within urban areas, particularly areas that are experiencing steady growth and placing additional pressures on local ecosystems. Environmental protection is critical on a site-by-site basis to ensure that cumulative decisions are not negatively impacting important ecosystems.
If you are interested, a Public Hearing will be held on at 7:00 pm, 2010 January 26 in City Council Chambers located at 7 Victoria Street West.
