Project H.E.A.T. Gets Warmed Up

Kamloops, B.C. - After the success of 2009's Safe for the Season program, Project H.E.A.T. aims to take crime prevention to the next level. Project H.E.A.T. (Help Eliminate Auto Theft) is a City of Kamloops Community Safety initiative that is designed to educate the public about issues regarding the theft of and theft from vehicles.

On weekends from July through October, Community Safety volunteers will patrol local parking lots and strip malls to provide tips and proactive measures to car owners to prevent theft and vehicle break-ins. To help create awareness and educate the public, the volunteers will leave "crime prevention tip cards" on the windshields of vehicles, or speak to vehicle owners face-to-face, with advice on how to secure valuables and vehicles. An information booth will be set up at all of the locations where the public can gather further information and enter to win a monthly draw for a steering wheel lock.

"Project H.E.A.T. is intended to be proactive and deliver a message that prevention is the key to reducing vehicle-related crime and personal risk," said Athena Smith, Crime Prevention Coordinator for the City of Kamloops.

The project received a jump start with a local media launch on June 29th, with Mayor Peter Milobar, local RCMP Sgt Scott Wilson, and the Project H.E.A.T. volunteers and coordinators in attendance.
