North Thompson Emergency Water Intake Project

The City currently operates a primary water intake on the South Thompson River, located opposite the Kamloops Centre for Water Quality (KCWQ) along River Street. This existing intake is the sole source for all of the potable water utility customers.

The new North Thompson Emergency Water Intake is located on Yates Road and will draw water from the North Thompson River. It will provide an alternative water source for the City of Kamloops in the event that an emergency forces the shut down of the primary water intake.

Attention Westsyde Residents

North Thompson Emergency Water Intake Water Main Tie-in – September 25-29, 2017

The City of Kamloops is advising Westsyde residents that, effective Monday, September 25, 2017, Acres Enterprises Ltd. will complete the connection of the North Thompson emergency water intake to the main water main that feeds Westsyde. This connection will have impacts on traffic and water services.

Single-Lane Traffic on Westsyde Road
From Monday, September 25, through Friday, September 29, traffic on Westsyde Road at Yates Road will be reduced to one lane in either direction. Crews will be working from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm; however, traffic restrictions will be in effect 24 hours a day due to the extent of the excavation. Please obey all traffic control personnel, equipment, and signage when driving or walking in the vicinity of the construction.

Please expect delays and remember to use the zipper merge technique.

Minimize Water Usage
From Monday, September 25, through Thursday, September 28, residents are asked to reduce water usage to essential use only. Residents will still have water; however, the City will have limited ability to supply water to the Westsyde reservoir during the tie-in. Therefore, it is important to minimize water usage. Please turn off any irrigation during this period.

Please note, water quality will not be compromised at any point during this process.

In August 2015, the provincial and federal governments supported this project by awarding the City with a New Building Canada Fund. Detailed design was undertaken through 2015/16, and the construction contract was tendered in the summer of 2016.

Construction began in late 2016 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
